REDCAT Announces Fall 2005 Studio--An Ongoing Performance Series Featuring Emerging Los Angeles Artists

September, Los Angeles 2005 -- REDCAT, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, announces the fall edition of Studio, an ongoing series that features new work and works-in-progress in dance, theater, multi-media and music by Los Angeles area artists. The performances will take place at REDCAT on both Sunday, October 2 and Monday, October 3 at 8:30 p.m.

The Studio series is an evening of short works and performances that span the diverse disciplines regularly represented at REDCAT. Works are presented in an informal environment that allows both the artists and audience to experience and explore the creative process. This edition of Studio is curated by Los Angeles choreographer Rosanna Gamson and multidisciplinary artist Michael Sakamoto, and will include the following six original works:

• b e t a f i s h, featuring Jed Smith, Zack Smith, and Ian Waxler, presents a quartet of broken toys, lovingly caressed into ambient frenzy.
• Sean Griffin directs the next manifestation of his Open House series exploring brutal children's games for percussionists.
• In reflex, Hysterica Dance Company fuses the urban pulse with sumptuous technique and world-class drama. The carefully delineated characterizations of each dancer create a sense of community driven by passion and discord.
• In The Cycle, Justin Lujan explores the cross pollination between hip-hop and theater with a story of two best friends striving for deeper meaning to life and a higher consciousness.
• Homeless Beatboxer is the account of a boy raised in group-homes and who eventually retires to skid row as a homeless beatboxer. A Mic and Dim Lights Performance Collective presents this hip-hop theater work using classical elements including rhyme, song, hand-made beats, and spoken word.
• Kristen Smiarowski performs It's Good, choreographed in collaboration with Carmela Hermann. Through dance and the spoken word, this solo performance examines our attempts to control, resist and stave off the inevitability of ending.

Studio was created to give new artists an opportunity to hone their skills and offer established artists a chance to test new material and works-in-progress before an audience.
