Los Angeles, November 6 - David Rosenboom conducts CalArts' New Century Players in the first of their two-part Experimental Americas series. The series explores the works of Latin American and U.S. composers working at the edges of composition and is part of REDCAT's Latin American Initiative that gives ongoing emphasis to contemporary Latin American arts. The concert marks the New Century Players' first appearance at REDCAT - the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater - CalArts' new performance venue and gallery dedicated to presenting new and challenging work that crosses disciplines, viewpoints and cultures. The performance begins at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $24 for general admission seating. Tickets may be purchased at the REDCAT box office located at the corner of 2nd and Hope streets in Walt Disney Concert Hall, by calling 213-237-2800 or by clicking here.

Experimental Americas 1 features the world premiere of Pulsares for solo piano, chamber orchestra, and quadraphonic electronic sound by Brazilian composerFlo Menezes. Solo pianist will be Vicki Ray. The program also includes Danzón No. 3 for solo guitar and chamber orchestra by prominent Mexican composer (and CalArts alumnus) Arturo Márquez, featuring guitarist Tiaraju Aronovich. Danzó;n No. 3 will also include the world premiere of Creatures of Habit, a dance piece choreographed by Colin Connor and commissioned by the New Century Players for this occasion. Dancers will be Colin Connor and Debra Noble. Haiku II and Cisma for alto and bass flutes with electronics by Guillermo Galindo, featuring flautist Rachel Rudich, and Make the Center Glow for chamber orchestra with semi-improvised materials and displays of interactive musical notation by recent CalArts alumnus Severin Behnen complete the evening's program.

A special Early Hours performance titled Numbers will take place throughout the REDCAT facility from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Organized by composer Michael Pisaro, Numbers will consist of subtle, quiet experimental music. Pieces by Antoine Beuger (Cantor Quartet), Jürg Frey (Landschaft mit Wörtern), Michael Pisaro (distance) and Manfred Werder (stück 2003) consider the music consequences of the whole numbers, ratios, sets (of players) and the null set. The concert is arranged as a single, palindromic work of 90 minutes. The works will be played by an ensemble of CalArts faculty, students, and alumni led by Pisaro.

CalArts' New Century Players, the professional faculty group devoted to the exploration and exposition of new languages for contemporary music, serves as REDCAT's resident ensemble. In this capacity, the group's renowned instrumentalists embrace creative influences from experimental traditions, new media and technologies, non-Western performance, structured improvisation and new narrative forms.
