Los Angeles, November 28 -- It is often said that the music of Johann Sebastian Bach transcends the time in which it was created. In this unusual concert, the virtuoso instrumentalists of Bach's Circle - Allan Vogel, oboe, Janice Tipton, flute; Patricia Mabee, harpsichord; Julie Feves, bassoon; Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick', cello; Elizabeth Baker, violin and Mark Menzies, viola - experiment with musical juxtapositions that span nearly three centuries of composition. The concert begins at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $24.00 for general admission seating. Tickets may be purchased at the REDCAT box office located at the corner of 2nd and Hope streets, by calling 213-237-2800 or online by clicking here.

The program includes music from J.S. Bach's The Musical Offering, Johann Christian Bach's Quintet in E-fl at major, Iannis Xenakis' ikhoor and Vinko Globokar's Correspondences.

Three hundred years ago Bach's circle of family, friends, students and colleagues created the glory that is Baroque music. Bach's Circle Baroque Ensemble serves the music of Johann Sebastian, his sons and contemporaries, so as to give audiences further opportunity to be enriched by some of the world's greatest music. Formed at CalArts, its members are faculty members and one alumna. Since its 1998/99 debut season, the group has given performances at Chamber Music Northwest, the Oregon Bach Festival, The Los Angeles Bach Festival, Occidental College, the South Bay Chamber Music Society, California Institute of the Arts and the Sedona Chamber Music Society.

This program is a departure for the group as they will explore some connections between the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the contemporary composers Vinko Globokar and Iannis Xenakis. The works of Johann Sebastian will be the Trio Sonata and the six-part Ricercare from the Musical Offering, and they will also perform a piece by one of Bach's sons, the Quintet in E-flat major of Johann Christian Bach, which was considered quite a departure from the music of his father at the time. Globokar's Correspondences will add CalArts faculty member Mark Menzies, viola.

REDCAT, a technologically advanced black box performance space, 3,000 sq. ft. art gallery and lounge located within Walt Disney Concert Hall complex in downtown Los Angeles, is a natural extension of CalArts, an institution that has been long known for challenging artistic traditions and enabling young artists to learn from--but also to question--some of the world's top practitioners in each artistic discipline. This same spirit of heightened cultural and civic discourse is what brings REDCAT to life.
