Los Angeles, February 25 - CalArts' New Century Players continue their exploration of new performance media from throughout the Americas at REDCAT with a program that includes a new piece written for the ensemble by Nick Didkovsky, a New York-based composer whose musical language blurs the distinctions between uptown and downtown, inside and outside. The concert also features James Tenney's Septet for six electric guitars and bass; Stephen L. Mosko's theatrical piece Night of the Long Knives; Germán Toro-Perez's Rothko II for wind instruments and interactive computer system; a new work by Larry Polansky; and a revival of musical performance art concepts by the legendary Kenneth Gaburo, the late experimental composer and musical thinker.
REDCAT - the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater - is CalArts' new performance venue and gallery in Walt Disney Concert Hall. Admission is $24 for the general public, $12 for students. Tickets may be purchased at the REDCAT box office located at the corner of 2nd and Hope streets, by calling 213-237-2800 or online by clicking here.
The program for Experimental Americas II is as follows:
- Septet (1981-2000) for six electric guitars and bass by James Tenney
- Yitgadal (2003-4) for re-tuned ensemble by Larry Polansky
- Night of the Long Knives (four songs for dramatic soprano and ensemble) by Stephen "Lucky" Mosko
- Rothko II (1999-2002) for ensemble and live electronics by Germán Toro-Pérez
- Mouth-Piece: Sextet for Solo Trumpet (1970) for trumpet and three slide projectors by Kenneth Gaburo, featuring guest perfomer Tom Dambly playing trumpet.
Composers Tenney, Polansky, Mosko, and Didkovsky will be present for a pre-concert talk with the audience; the presence of Larry Polansky and Nick Didkovsky is made possible in part through a grant from Meet the Composer, Inc.
CalArts' New Century Players, the professional faculty group devoted to the exploration and exposition of new languages for contemporary music, serves as REDCAT's resident ensemble. In this capacity, the group's renowned instrumentalists embrace creative influences from experimental traditions, new media and technologies, non-Western performance, structured improvisation and new narrative forms.
Funding from Meet The Composer, Inc. is provided with the support of National Endowment of the Arts, ASCAP, and the Virgil Thomson Foundation. Didkovsky's work was funded in part by the Composer Assistance Program of the American Music Center.
REDCAT inaugural season sponsors include Shamrock Holdings, KCRW FM, The L.A. Weekly, and The Standard Hotel, with additional media sponsorship provided by The Downtown News.
