Valencia, April 19, 2004 -- CalArts' MFA Writing Program is holding its annual showcase of work by graduating students at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) on May 8. The afternoon event, beginning at 3 p.m., is also a celebration of the 10-year anniversary of the MFA Writing Program, which is housed in the CalArts School of Critical Studies.

The showcase features an expansive array of readings and performances. These include recitals of genre-bending fiction and poetry, hybrid works based on cultural theory, an original television pilot, an operatic libretto, a photo essay, a multimedia musical, and digital hyper-text. A reception follows.

The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are recommended, however. They can be made by calling 213 237-2800.

REDCAT is CalArts' performance space and gallery inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex in downtown Los Angeles. Its entrance is located at the corner of W. 2nd Street and S. Hope Street.

Established in 1994, the MFA Writing Program supports experimental work that challenges conventional genres and practices. The highly flexible program gives writers the opportunity to work in the areas of cultural commentary, fiction, criticism, writing for performance, poetry, playwriting, and writing for interactive media. It also invites students to take the practice of writing in entirely new directions -- including innovative combinations of writing with other art forms.

CalArts, the first U.S. higher educational institution to integrate the visual and performing arts under one roof, is recognized as the nation's leading laboratory for the arts. Housing six schools -- Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theater -- CalArts embraces creative cross-pollination among diverse art forms and traditions, and strongly encourages each artist to pursue his or her vision within a broad context of social and cultural understanding.

REDCAT, an interdisciplinary arts center that allows Los Angeles audience to follow the latest developments in the performing, visual and media arts from around the world, is a natural extension of CalArts' educational mission. Its programming features a wide-ranging array of interdisciplinary performances, music and dance concerts, multimedia performances, theater works, film and video screenings, readings, and art exhibitions.

REDCAT inaugural season sponsors include Shamrock Holdings, KCRW FM, The L.A. Weekly, and The Standard Hotel, with additional media sponsorship provided by The Downtown News.
