May 2, 3 p.m., Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT)
View the event
Los Angeles, April 23-The next generation of performers of contemporary music, trained at CalArts, appear at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) on Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m., in a program of works by Prokofiev, Ligeti, Cage, So and Burns. General admission $24; CalArts employees, alumni, and non-CalArts students, $18; CalArts students, $12. For event information or box office, call (213) 237-2800, click here.
This concert explores a gamut of musical possibilities: from the humorous and sardonic sketches of Ligeti's "Ten Pieces for Wind Quintet" and Prokofiev's "Sarcasms," to the strange beauty found in the labyrinthine Weave by Chris Burns, a Bay-area composer. CalArts composer Mark So's delicate, and minimalist accompaniment to a similarly conceived film by Dorian Ahmeti contrasts with John Cage's deadly serious, absurdist and proto-Fluxus groundbreaking "Theater Piece."
These works, in addition to demanding a very high level of performance, reveal a "core sample" of compositional ideas and techniques through the last century of chamber composition into the next generation of composers. Performers include Peter Jacobson, Cathlene Pineda, Christine Tavolacci, Kristin Olsen, Joshua Emerich, Jonathan Stehney, Amanda Tabor, Maria Stefanova, and Mark So.
REDCAT - the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater is CalArts' new performance venue and gallery in the Walt Disney Concert Hall, located at the corner of 2nd and Hope streets.
REDCAT inaugural season sponsors include Shamrock Holdings, KCRW FM, The L.A. Weekly, and the Standard Hotel, with additional media sponsorship provided by the Downtown News.
