REDCAT Announces Studio, Ongoing Performance Series Featuring Emerging Los Angeles Artists

Los Angeles, CA, April 27, 2004 - REDCAT, The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, announces the Spring edition of Studio, an ongoing series that features new work and works-in-progress in dance, theater, multi-media and music by Los Angeles area artists. The performance will take place at REDCAT, located in the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex, on Sunday, May 16 at 8:30 pm. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $6 for students. The Studio series is a curated evening of short works and performances that span the diverse disciplines regularly represented at REDCAT. Works are presented in an informal environment that allows both the artists and audience to experience and explore the creative process.

The second edition of Studio is curated by Ginger Holguin, Technical Director and Producer of the Japan America Theatre, and Denise Uyehara, performance artist, writer, and playwright. The program includes eight original works:

• An unusual electroacoustic piece by composer Yorgos Adamis, who will be performing on his three Hungarian folk flutes live in a non-traditional way, through his nostrils and mouth simultaneously.
• Ann Kaneko and Nurit Siegel fuse film and live performance in a whimsical tale of a woman's adventures through Los Angeles. Journey to the Ocean explores the urban landscape in a modern silent film punctuated by live sound and movement.
• Amended, a short play written by Matthew McCray, uses text from Richard III and speeches of Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth, Jerry Falwell and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to explore America's historic acceptance of legalized discrimination.
• Mighty Sons of Hercules, by Doug Cooney, is a solo performance using movement and text while incorporating audience members as set pieces. This serio-comic story is set at an AIDS memorial in South Beach, Miami.
• Corpus Delicti presents Fasces Follie, a Butoh carnival with eyes, feet, mouths, hands and hearts -- donated, borrowed and stolen -- in a life and death struggle orchestrated by the New Empire.
• Post-apocalyptic projections of bloodshed layered in a sugary green tint satisfy like the candy US soldiers disperse to hungry displaced children of war. Kristina Wong's saccharine but eerie narration of all things "green" juxtaposed against these images reveal what is camouflaged under all things sweet.
• In Traveler's Cabaret, a fusion of music, movement and video by Valerie Broatch, a hotel window projects video animation of dreamlike imagery that reflects the traveler's changing internal reality.
• The Beverly Hills Wind Trio spins more than a bottle in a musical truth-or-dare to tackle a lesson in tears, triumph, and triads, and other words that start with "T".

Studio was created to give new artists an opportunity to hone their skills and offer established artists a chance to test new material and works-in-progress before an audience.
