BOUNCE:
MARK BRADFORD AND GLENN KAINO

Opening Reception: February 4, 7-10 pm
Artists' Talk: March 13, 3 pm

Bounce: Mark Bradford and Glenn Kaino offers unique consideration of the social history of Los Angeles through the work of two emerging Los Angeles-based artists. CalArts alumnus Mark Bradford makes paintings that explore the limitations, restrictions and artistic tensions rooted in human experience and the social negotiations of place. The artist's interest in the signage of South Los Angeles, "is about something that is abandoned...You learn quickly walking by these urban abstractions that within the walls of those abandoned buildings lie the accumulated stories, half-forgotten but retaining an energy-in-waiting." Glenn Kaino's often kinetic, always dynamic sculptures play off language, history, and theoretical constructions to question the cultural matrix in which he is entangled. His recent works reveal a fascination with Rube Goldberg machines, Andy Warhol and The Factory, Schrodinger's Cat, and quantum equations. He is consumed with temporality--most importantly, the experience of time in everyday life and how we account for peculiar instances of dissonance between chronological and episodic passages of time. Bounce features new works by both artists. A catalogue featuring installation views of the exhibition, an essay by curator Eungie Joo, and artists' conversations between Mark Bradford and Kara Walker and Glenn Kaino and Daniel J. Martinez will be available in March.

Bounce: Mark Bradford and Glenn Kaino is made possible by a generous grant from the American Center Foundation. Additional funding provided by Gil Freisen and Lombard-Freid Fine Arts, New York.
