With its nationally recognized college programs in the performing arts and the potential of gainful employment in the entertainment industry, Los Angeles has long been a magnet for gifted, younger dance, theater and music artists. Once here, however, they often find the means and mechanisms for encouraging new work to be more limited than in such smaller cities as Minneapolis, Seattle and Chicago; and are forced to leave to seek opportunities elsewhere. CalArts president Steven Lavine moderates a discussion about what L.A. needs to support new work, with Luis Alfaro (playwright, poet and MacArthur Fellow), Ben Cameron (executive director of the Theater Communications Group), Leigh Ann Hahn (director of programming of Grand Performances), Amy Knoles (percussionist, founding member of The California EAR Unit and CalArts faculty member), Lynn Manning (actor, poet, playwright and president of the Firehouse Theater Company) and Victoria Marks (Alpert Award-winning choreographer and faculty member).
