PETER KUBELKA: METAPHORIC FILMS
Featuring Poetry and Truth | West Coast premiere

"A hilarious instance of intellectual vandalism." The New York Times

Making his first Los Angeles appearance in more than a decade, celebrated Austrian avant-garde filmmaker and theorist Peter Kubelka gives a spirited lecture on his "metaphoric" films and screens a selection of shorts. The program focuses on Dichtung und Wahrheit (Poetry and Truth, 2003, 13 min., color), a film made from consecutive outtakes from a Euro TV ad shoot. Kubelka's first new work since the '70s, the short serves up the serial duplication of gestures (a man fixing his hair in a store-display mirror, a woman being fed chocolates) as a found-footage companion to the filmmaker's own catalogue of revelatory repetition--and an unwitting critique of socialized behavior. Shown with Kubelka's first film, Mosaik im Vertrauen (Mosaic in Confidence, 1955, 16 min., b/w), the peerlessly scathing Unsere Afrikareise (Our Trip to Africa, 1966, 13 min., color), and Pause! (1977, 12 min., color).

The UCLA Film and Television Archive is presenting a separate program of films by Peter Kubelka on Sunday, October 2. See cinema.ucla.edu.
