FIRST-PERSON AFRICA:
AN EVENING WITH JEAN-MARIE TÉNO

"One hears the voice of Africa expressing itself in the first person and taking the risk of subjectivity, without using the excuse of poverty or relying on folklorism." Libération

Cameroonian filmmaker Jean-Marie Téno is on hand to present a selection of his recent work. He has directed 10 documentaries--including Afrique, je te plumerai (Africa, I Will Fleece You, 1992), Vacance au pays (A Trip to the Country, 2000), Le Mariage d'Alex (Alex's Wedding, 2003) and Le Malentendu Colonial (The Colonial Misunderstanding, 2004)--and the award-winning feature Clando (Clandestine, 1996). Téno's films depict the complexity of the issues facing contemporary Africa: the obsession with modernity, the conflicted desire to conform to a model of "development" imposed from outside, political repression, chaotic urbanization and the re-emergence of polygamy. He was featured earlier this year at the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar and The Museum of Modern Art.

In person: Jean-Marie Téno
