CELLOS
World premieres Virtuosic cello music takes center stage with four gems of late-20th-century composition and five world premiere performances. The program includes Pierre Boulez's Messagesquisse for solo cello and six additional cellos, Arvo Pärt's Fratres for eight cellos, Bipartitions for cello and tuba by Bruce Broughton, and Earle Brown's Special Events,one of the late composer's last pieces. Receiving premieres are works for multiple cellos by Emily Corwin, Art Jarvinen, Mark Menzies and William Roper. Cellists include Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick of The California EAR Unit, with Rachel Arnold, James Barry, Jessica Catron, Emily Corwin, April Guthrie, Peter Aniela Perry, Chris Votek, and Ashley Walters. Guest performers are Joyce Hwang, piano; Nick Rosen, double bass; and Doug Tornquist, tuba.
