Ben Johnston

May 17, 2006

Ben Johnston at 80
World premiere

“Ben Johnston’s music needs--no, demands--your greater attention.” L.A. Weekly

“One of the best non-famous composers this country has to offer...” John Rockwell, New York Times

“Ben Johnston picked up the history of tonality where it stalled in the 16th century, and carried it into the 21st. Rhythmically, harmonically, notationally, he leaped out ahead and created the means for a future music we haven’t heard yet.” Kyle Gann, Village Voice

To celebrate this American master¹s 80th birthday, REDCAT presents Ben Johnston¹s work for microtonal piano, Suite (1978) performed by Gayle Blankenburg, in an evening of chamber music rarely heard in Los Angeles, including the infamous Knocking Piece that started riots in Rio. Sam Torrisi will Ponder Nothing on clarinet; and microtonal guitar virtuoso John Schneider sings and plays songs from The Tavern-written for him by Johnston.
