Melding contemporary classical music with the exuberance of streetwise salsa beats, the Venezuelan-born, U.K.-based pianist plays groundbreaking new commissions from composers as diverse as Javier Alvarez, Chick Corea, Douglas Finch, Deirdre Gribbin, Tania Léon, Gabriela Ortiz, Hilda Paredes and Errollyn Wallen. Now out on CD from Somm Recordings, Salsa Nueva marks a vibrant new departure for classical piano repertoire. Riu performs at REDCAT with percussionist Wilmer Sifontes.
