DAN HURLIN: HIROSHIMA MAIDEN
West Coast premiere

"Dan Hurlin has told, exquisitely and movingly, a tale of despair, guilt and political manipulation. His brilliant use of puppets eerily both distances us from the horror and intensifies it." The Village Voice

Dan Hurlin's beautifully staged puppet theater work brings to life a forgotten chapter of history: the harrowing account of 25 Hiroshima survivors--all young women horribly disfigured in the nuclear attack--who visited the United States in 1955 to undergo reconstructive surgery. The first A-bomb victims seen in person by the American public, the so-called "Hiroshima Maidens" became the objects of a media frenzy that culminated with an unbelievable appearance on the TV program This Is Your Life. Hurlin, an Alpert and Obie Award winner, directs a cast of nine master puppeteers, set to an original score by Robert Een.
