CalArts President Steven D. Lavine welcomes cultural critic, urban historian and novelist Norman M. Klein, curator Margo Bistis and designer Andreas Kratky for a celebration marking the publication—and corresponding exhibition—of The Imaginary 20th Century. Cosponsored by CalArts and ZKM (Center for Art and Media) in Karlsruhe, this historical science-fiction novel operates as a gigantic interactive data field, with 2,200 images and films as well as a unique sound engine. The story involves the picaresque adventures of a woman seduced in 1901 by four suitors, each with his own vision of the coming century. This whimsical metajourney is available on DVD-ROM, housed inside a specially designed hardcover book, while the accompanying exhibition of The Imaginary 20th Century is being held at ZKM. The program includes a presentation by project codirectors Klein, Bistis and Kratky, who screen portions of the DVD-ROM and discuss the implications of its new approach to narrative.
