Featuring the Art Ensemble of Chicago—Great Black Music— "Ancient to the Future"

Revered for unbounded musical daring, radical innovation, and a sustained exploration of black music forms, the fabled Art Ensemble of Chicago makes its first Los Angeles projection since 1990 in this year’s edition of the CalArts Creative Music Festival. Composer-saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell and composer-drummer Famoudou Don Moye -- two of the Art Ensemble’s founding members -- are joined by trumpeter Corey Wilkes and bassist Harrison Bankhead to close this two-night program.

The festival begins with a performance by Alpert Award-winning composer-violinist Mark Feldman. A one-time Memphis session man who now regularly collaborates with John Zorn and John Abercrombie and performs with several U.S. and European orchestras, Feldman appears here with composer-pianist Sylvie Courvoisier. Opening is Dwight Trible's Sacred Urban Echoes with T.I.M.E., featuring vocalist and poet Kamau Daaood. Jubilant music and poetry that spans spiritual expression, jazz and the avant-garde.
