LAPD – Los Angeles Poverty Department: UTOPIA/dystopia

This provocative performance concludes a series of community events, first begun last April, that question civic policy in downtown Los Angeles, where one person’s utopia has come to be another’s dystopia. During the past 40 years, historic downtown has seen the redevelopment of Bunker Hill into a burgeoning high-rise financial center, while below it Skid Row has been left to languish in grinding poverty. UTOPIA/dystopia assembles a diverse group of downtown residents—including homeless and formerly homeless residents of Skid Row, the working poor, immigrant families, and the growing population of loft dwellers—to reflect on the different measures of lived experience in the area today. Founded in 1985 by director, writer, actor and activist John Malpede, LAPD is a performance company and community group whose members live and work in Skid Row.
