Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz: Ölelés
West Coast Premiere
Co-presented with FITLA (International Latino Theatre Festival of Los Angeles

At once gripping, physically intense and genuinely lyrical, this award-winning extended duet for two men marks the first collaboration between acclaimed Catalan choreographers and performers Jordi Cortés and Damián Muñoz -- two of Spain’s most innovative young dance artists. Based on writer Sándor Márai’s 1942 masterpiece Embers, the high-velocity, nearly violent piece dramatizes the bitter reunion of two long-estranged friends, who look back to the fateful betrayal that shattered their bond 40 years earlier. Ölelés has received the Ciudad de Barcelona Award and the Premio de la Feria Internacional de Huesca. Cortés has performed with Iztok Kovack, Nigel Charnock and DV8 Physical Theatre, among others. Muñoz, dubbed the Almodóvar of dance, won Spain’s national choreographic competition in 1995 before forming his own company.

Funded in part by a generous grant from The George and MaryLou Boone Fund for Artistic Advancement.
