FILM & VIDEO SHOWCASE
CalArts' School of Film/Video will inaugurate a new series of in-person REDCAT screenings by prominent filmmaking graduates Sunday night, May 2, with two works by Christopher Wilcha. Each program will highlight at least one film or video made while each artist was a student at CalArts, and, when possible, present this work in juxtaposition with work made after that individual moved into the professional arena. Wilcha's "The Target Shoots First" was one of the strongest CalArts documentaries of the late nineties, and his new "Second Hand Stories" was recently completed as the pilot for a new PBS series.

The Target Shoots First
70 mins. (MFA thesis, 1998)
"Wilcha, a 22-year-old college graduate and alternative-rock enthusiast, was hired by the Columbia Record and Tape Club to help launch a whole new niche-marketing division. He brought his video camera to work every day, and what emerges are selective glimpses of his extended stint with the company. Wilcha's wry intelligence kept me glued to the screen." (Jonathan Rosenbaum)
Second Hand Stories
25 mins. (PBS Pilot)
Equal parts video travelogue, character driven narrative documentary and pop-culture archeological expedition, the film reveals the passions and obsessions of Americans by taking a closer look at the second-hand stuff they buy, sell and collect.
Wilcha will be present and after the screenings will have a question and answer session.
