April 29, 2004 BALINESE GAMELAN BURAT WANGI WITH GUEST ARTISTS I NYOMAN WINDHA, I DEWA PUTU BERATA AND I NYOMAN CERITA REDCAT presents a collaboration between the gamelan Burat Wangi and three of the most important figures in today's younger generation of Balinese artists: I Nyoman Windha, whose work is widely admired for its melodic and formal beauty; I Dewa Putu Berata, noted for his groundbreaking fusion of Eastern and Western musicmaking; and I Nyoman Cerita, a choreographer who has created numerous dance works for gamelan clubs in Bali. The gamelan Burat Wangi, founded in 1972 by CalArts faculty members I Nyoman Wenten and Nanik Wenten, has performed extensively at venues in the U.S. and Bali. The ensemble's repertoire includes Balinese court gamelan, traditional and new dance choreography, and the Balinese kecak monkey chant.
