David Rosenboom, dean of the CalArts School of Music, conducts the New Century Players in the first of a two-part selection of works by Latin American and U.S. composers working at the edges of composition and performance. The evening's program includes Arturo M´rquez's Danzón No. 3 for solo guitar and chamber orchestra with guitar solo-ist Tiaraju Aronovich and choreography by Colin Connor, and Severin Behnen's Make the Center Glow for chamber orchestra with semi-improvised materials and a display of interactive musical notation. Also featured are Guillermo Galindo's Haiku II and Cisma for alto and bass flutes with electronic textures-including poetry by Michael McClure-with flute soloist Rachel Rudich. The program is rounded out by the world premiere of Brazilian composer Flo Menezes' Pulsares for solo piano, chamber or-chestra and quadraphonic electronic sound with piano soloist Vicki Ray. CalArts' New Century Players, the professional faculty group devoted to the exploration and exposition of new languages for contemporary music, serves as REDCAT's resident ensemble. In this capacity, the group's renowned instrumentalists embrace creative influences in different experimental traditions, new media and technologies, non-Western performance, structured improvisation and new narrative forms.
